Trial Lesson & Fees
If you are new to tea, please begin with a tea experience. You can see the tearoom and our lessons for yourself before deciding to join.
Tea Experience ¥4,500
Japanese sweets and usucha (thin tea), basic practice, and watching a temae. About 1.5 hours; all utensils are provided. You are welcome to come with friends.
Monthly Lessons ¥12,000
Three lessons a month. ¥11,000 for those aged 30 and under. No enrollment fee; the mizuya fee is included. Children's class (ages 6–15): ¥9,000 per month.
Chaji & Advanced Lessons
Chaji lessons: three times a year, ¥48,000 (including preparatory lessons). Advanced (sōden) lessons: once a month, with fees depending on the content. Non-members are also welcome.
Fees & Attendance
Lesson Days
Sunday afternoons, Tuesday evenings and weekday afternoons. For the weekday afternoon class, the next month's dates are arranged together each month.
Make-up Lessons
Missed lessons can be made up. There is no strict deadline, but as a guide, please include them in your monthly preferred dates within about six months.
Payment
Please pay the monthly fee in a gessha envelope by your first lesson of the month. No enrollment fee; the mizuya fee is included. Certificate (menjō) application fees will be explained each time.
Seasonal Gifts
Following tea ceremony custom, we ask for seasonal greetings at Obon and at the year's end. Details will be explained when you join.
Leave & Withdrawal
If you wish to take a leave or withdraw, please let us know at least two months in advance.

Q. Is it all right if I have no experience?
Yes. Most students at Senrakuan started with no experience of tea.
Q. What do I need to bring to a tea experience?
All utensils are provided. Please just come as you are.
Q. Are the lesson days fixed?
We have classes on Sunday afternoons, Tuesday evenings and weekday afternoons. For the weekday afternoon class, the next month's dates are arranged together each month.
Q. Is it all right if I can't sit in seiza?
We ask you to sit in seiza only while a temae is performed and while you receive tea as a guest. At other times, please relax and sit comfortably. Seiza chairs are also available to borrow.
Q. Is there a dress code?
Kimono is recommended, but Western clothes are fine. If you wear Western clothes, please bring white socks. Jeans and tight skirts are not suited to seiza, so please come in loose, comfortable clothing.
Q. Can I take part in English?
Yes, we can guide you in English. Please feel free to ask.
